Comb

Inuit peoples, St Lawrence Island, Alaska
Classic Thule period, approx. 1100 - 1600 AD
Marine mammal ivory
Height: 7.8 cm.
Intricately carved from walrus ivory, with the figure of a caribou as ornament, combs such as this one were carved in miniature so that they could carried around and sometimes worn. Judging by the colour and condition, this looks to have been an excavated piece.
